How to Tell Real Silk from Fake

On the market, "imitation silk" (polyester / viscose) looks similar but costs far less. Here are a few tricks to judge whether what you received is genuine mulberry silk.

The Burn Test (Most Reliable)

Pull a thread and light it: real silk smells like burning hair, and the ash crumbles into black powder when rubbed; polyester smells chemical, forms a hard bead and won't crumble. Only take the thread from a hidden spot, and only if you can sacrifice the sample.

Hand-Feel & Sheen

Real silk feels cool and smooth with a "grippy" drag, and its sheen is soft and shifts with the angle; imitation silk feels slick, with a harsh, flat glare. Clench it tight and release: real silk creases naturally and recovers slowly, while polyester stays crisp and resists wrinkling.

The Rustle Test

Rub the fabric between your palms: real silk makes a faint "swish" (the silk rustle / scroop), while synthetics are essentially silent.

Yarn Strength

Wet, real silk loses strength markedly and breaks easily; dry, it is tough. Imitation silk changes little when wet.

Price & Labels

Real silk has its cost; "silk" far below market price is probably fake. Look for the fiber label 100% mulberry silk / Silk 100%. On our Quality page we publish the measured specs of our qualified products.
